PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance,
noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials.Discuss significant architectural features.
This detached one-and-one-half story single-family residence has a square plan
with a gable-roofed front porch with multiple wood and bracket supports , and a
turned wood railing. It sits on a cut-stone foundation. The facade is asymmetric 1
and consists of an off-set front entrance with 9/1 double-hung and 6/1 double-hung
windows. The frame construction is finished in shingles and
rests on a cut stone foundation. The gable roof is covered with new wood shakes
and features overhanging eaves with exposed rafters, and a central brick chimney.
The axis of the roof is parallel to the street. Outbuildings include a carriage
house.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site
and surrounding area lend the property significance.
This property is significant because it is associated with a person important
in Bozeman history, Fred F. Willson. Son of General Lester S. Willson, an
early Bozeman pioneer, Willson was born in 1877 in Bozeman. He attended
Montana State College for two years, and graduated from Columbia University
in architecture in 1902. He studied for two years abroad and upon his
return, Willson practiced with C. S. Haire in Helena and Butte. In his long
practice from 1910-1956, he designed many public, commercial and residential
buildings.
The residence was designed for P. C. and Mary Gardner Waite. Waite was a
partner in the insurance company first organized by his father-in-law, E.
M. Gardner in 1886 (see South Grand and 713 South Willson) . The Waites
occupied the house until 1965.
SIGNIFICANCE: This structure is potentially eligible for the National Register
because of its historical associations and because of its architectural
integrity of materials, location, setting, design and use.
INTEGRITY: Assess the degree to which the structure/site,and surrounding area accurately convey the historical associations of the
property.
INTEGRITY: The historic integrity of this property has been retained .due to the
survival of original design and materials and continuity of use, setting, and
location.
