This detachedone-and-one-half story single-family residence has an L-shaped plan with the ell to the rear and an attached garage to the side. The symmetrical facade consists of a flush front entrance with 9-paned shuttered windows and 4/4 double-hung windows on the second story. The frame construction is finished in board and batten and the gable roof is covered with cedar shingles. There are three symmetrical dormer windows across the front and an exterior brick chimney at each end of the house. The axis of the roof is parallel to the street. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site and surrounding area lend the property significance. This property is significant because it is associated with a person important in Bozeman history, Fred F. Willson. Son of General Lester S. Willson, an early Bozeman pioneer, Willson was born in 1877 in Bozeman. He attended Montana State College for two years and graduated from Columbia University in architecture in 1902. He studied for two years abroad and upon his return, Willson practiced with C. S. Haire in Helena and Butte. In his long practice ' from 1910-1956, he designed many public, commercial and residential buildings. I The residence was built for Dr. Poland Scherer, a local physician., in 1936. i i Significance: This structure is a contributing element within a potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Nationalization Phase of Bozeman' s historic/architectural development. 3 I I i i INTEGRITY: Assess the degree to which the structure/site,and surrounding area accurately convey the historical associations of the property. WKson -- Scherer House This white two story frame building , painted white, has a gable roof with dorme, The entry door is framed by pilasters that support a cornice treated with lentils. I is flanked on either side by large windows framed with dark green shutters .
