Historic Name : The Hunter House
Date c . 1900
Original Owner : J . A. Hunter ( ? )
Significance : Historically related to the streetscape of 19th
century houses on the north side of Olive Street , at the inter-
section of S . 5th Ave . , this house may have been occupied previous
to 1892 by Bozeman pioneer J . A . Hunter , and his wife , Lyda Hunter .
Lyda Hunter is listed as the resident of 205 S . 5th Avenue ( listed
as the widow of J . A. Hunter) in the city directories of 1904-5 ,
1910- 11 , and 1912- 13 . By 1916 , according to the 1916- 17 directory ,
she had moved to 519 W . Koch . While no house appears on this site
on the 1898 bird ' s eye view of the city , "Mrs . J . (widow) Hunter"
is listed in the 1892 city directory at an address that possibly
matches this one : 2d Ave . NW , 3 S . 5th St . " "Second Avenue" may
refer to Olive Street , which is the second street south of Main
Street , while " 3 S . 5th" implies that the house listed was at
the northernmost point on S . 5th Avenue , which this house is .
Until the bird ' s eye view can be proven incorrect however , the date
of construction must be assumed to fall between 1898 , the date
of the view , and 1904 , the date of the earliest Sanborn Map on
which the house appears . Hunter was among the first Bozeman
residents , having settled here in 1867 after emigrating from
New York . Lyda Hunter was by 1910 a teacher at the Hawthorne
School .
