The southernmost of a complete , one block long streetscape of
houses all built by local carpenter , W . H . Cline this house is one
of the few examples in the district , and in Bozeman , of the
"American Four Square" house type , which is quite common in other
parts of the country. The cubic form of this 2-story house creates
I a strong visual termination for the row of four smaller , table
front Bungalows adjacent to it , also built by Cline .
It is possible that the original house on the site of 302 S . 5th ,
also built by Cline in 1917 , but replaced in about 1936 , was similar
to this one . If it was , the original streetscape would have con-
sisted of two pair of identical Bungalows ( 308 and 314 316 and 320
S . 5th ) flanked by a Four Square on either side .
I
The porch of this house , which is very similar to that of 316 S .
5th , helps to confirm the common builder attribution .
I
Sometime between 1922 and 1927 another local carpenter , Peter J .
Cruickshank and his wife Mabel Cruickshank , a music teacher ,
moved into this house .
