The bearing wall construction is brick and has shingles on the gable ends. The structure rests on a concrete block foundation. The hipped roof is covered with rust asphalt shingles and features partially returning eaves and a central brick chimney. The axis of the main roof is perpendicular to the street with gable intersects facing front and side. Cohen Bozeman, Montana flit V ►rr+nrn 1nfr' 224 S. 6th 1985 revision Matt Cohen, surveyor One of only five brick buildings in the district, this house seems to have been patterned after "House Design #1061" in Hodgson' s turn of the century mail order house catalog. It may have been built as part of a pair, along with 221 S. 6th Ave. , another brick house directly across the street. Both houses stand on prominent corner lots. Undocumented research on the survey form places the date of construction at c. 1908 - a reasonable estimate. George Bartz, an employee of Thomas Red & I CO. (a grocer at 11 E. Main) , is listed in the 1904-5 directory as living on S. 3rd Ave. , but in the 1910-11 directory as living here. By 1916 Bartz had apparently opened his own grocery at 225 W. Main St. In 1927 his grocery was at 27 S. Tracy. Bartz died in 1932, at which time his wife apparently moved out of this large house and built 513 W. Curtiss next to it as a small residence and grocery store. Since a virtually identical house in wood, 422 S. 6th Ave. , as well as 221 S. 6th Ave. , noted above, are both associated to some degree with local builder A.J. Svorkmoe, tentative attribution to that builder for this house can be made. Bibliographer Application for Sewer Connection, September 8, 1932, George Bartz, "For Record only.
