522 S. 6th
1985 revision
Matt Cohen, surveyor
One of the several excellent examples in the district of this eaves front
Bungalow house type, this house bears the subtle characteristics indicative of
the work of local builder Elmer Bartholomew - particularly the porch detailing,
and overall massing. Some other houses in the district, built by Bartholomew
that are very similar to this one are 504 W. Main St. , 519 W. Babcock St. ,
and 705 S. 6th Ave. This imposing house, which stands on a prominent corner
lot, is counterbalanced by 521 S. 6th Ave. , a very similar house directly
across the street. The two houses together create a very striking effect.
This house was probably built for Ernest J. Parkin, president of the Waite-
Parkin Co. , a real estate, loan and insurance company, the descentant firm
of which is still in business in Bozeman. Parkin is listed at this address in
the city directories as late as 1927, and perhaps later.
