Matt Cohen , surveyor
Despite the non-contributing asbestos shingle sheathing , this
simple , turn of the century house is significant as one of the
first to be built in this southern section of the district , and
as an example of a pattern book house . The house appears to
have been derived from " House Pattern No . 1048" , of Hodgson ' s
mail order house pattern catalog : Practical Bungalows and
Cottages for Town and Country . The house does not appear on the
1898 bird ' s eye view of the city , but does appear on the Sanborn
Map of 1904.
Ralph W . Gilman , farm foreman for the Montana Agricultural
Extension Station , lived here in the 19 ' teens . At that time ,
this house may have had • a small subsistence farm associated with
it . By 1927 , Lewis J . Johnson , a " salesman" , lived here .
