1985 revision
Matt Cohen , surveyor
This very well preserved vernacular house , which displays elements
of both the Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles , is not only
of high individual significance , but is especially significant
as a 19th century house type in an area dominated by Bungalow and
post-Bungalow style houses . The house was one of the first built in
this Southern section of the district , and stood quite isolated
when built . It may have been built by local carpenter Luke Cowan ,
who was living here in 1916 . Cowan had previously lived in 705 S .
7th Ave . , which he also may ahve built .
In the 1916- 17 City directory , Cowan is listed as living here with
his wife , and Saund . N . Cowan , perhaps his son , who was County
Assessor. In 1927 , William F . Cowan , also a County Assessor , was
living here with his wife , Farmie Cowan . The house remained in
the Cowan family at least as late as the late 1930 ' s .
