It is also one of the few 19th century houses in the district . The present house , barn , and a windmill ( no longer standing ) are shown on the 1898 bird ' s eye view of the city . A small subsistence farm was probably operated here until well into the early 20th century . Just after the turn of the century , and possibly earlier , the house was the residence of William M . Bole , manager , and by 1927 the president of the Chronicle Publishing Co . Bole lived here from at least as early as 1904 , to at least as late as 1927 . According to Marjorie Brister ' s 1969 "Tour of Historic Sites of Bozeman " , a generally unreliable source , the house was built by Madison County cattleman M . D . Jeffers as a residence for his sons while they were attending Montana Agricultural College . James P . Bole , a relative and editor of the Bozeman Chronicle , between about 1910 and the mid- 19 ' teens lived in 415 and 427 W . Curtiss . In 1971 , an apartment was built inside the barn .
