This detached one-and-one- half story single-family residence has a rectangular

facade is symmetrical and consists of a central front entrance with 1/1 and 6/ 1
double-hung windows. There is a shed-roofed rectangular bay window to the
east. The frame construction is finished in 2z" beveled siding and rests on
a concrete foundation. The gable roof is covered with dark brown asphalt shingles
and features a central gabled dormer and boxed eaves with knee braces and exposed

1985 revision
Matt Cohen , surveyor
An excellent example of the Bungalow style , this house appears
to be the work of Elmer Bartholomew , the most important early
20th century builder in the district . Bartholomew may have
collaborated with another builder , William C . Smith , for this
house . The imposing structure makes a strong termination for
this West Main St . streetscape . Three of the several virtually
identical houses in the district also attributed to Bartholomew ,
which are most easily distinguished by the unusual porch designs ,
are 522 and 705 S . 6th Ave , and 519 W . Babcock Street .
The house was probably built for Hiram F. West , co-owner of
the Davis & West undertaking business located at 125 W . Main .
West is listed as the resident here in the 1914 through 1927 City
directories .
According to the 1890 Sanborn Map , this house replaced an earlier ,
tri - gabled house on the site , which originally occupied a lot
that took up the whole block .
