511 W . Babcock
1985 revision
Matt Cohen , surveyor
One of a striking row of five houses ( 507 , 511 , 515 , 519
and 523 W . Babcock) built around 1911 by local builder
Elmer L . Bartholomew , this house is an interesting combination
of the Colonial Revival and Bungalow styles , and is of high
architectural significance relative to the district . It is
very similar in plan and overall design to the Bungalow style
507 , 515 and 523 W . Babcock St . This streetscape is one of
the earliest indications of Bozeman ' s substantial early 20th
century building boom , which began around 1910 and which
picked up considerable momentum in the ensuing decade .
( Note : attribution of this house to Bartholomew is based
on visual evidence only , though there is little doubt that
he was the builder) .
Little is known of the early occupants of this house . By
1927 , Leslie E . Gage , a jeweler with a shop at 20 S . Black
St. , was living here with his wife , Edna F . Gage . In the
city directories of 1916- 17 and earlier , Gage was listed as
living on W . Main St .
