1985 revision
Matt Cohen , surveyor
An excellent , well preserved example of a Colonial Revival
style pattern book house , this house bears the distinctive
proportions and detailing of the work of one of Bozeman ' s
leading early 20th century builders , Elmer L . Bartholomew .
Bartholomew , who signed the 1917 water permit for the site ,
probably based the design of this house on "House Design No .
2040" in Hodgson ' s mail order house pattern book ( see appendix) .
A very similar house is 214 S . 6th Ave .
Since the house appears on the 1912 Sanborn Map , and since it
is similar to several houses on W . Babcock Street built by
Bartholomew around 1911 , loll is a reasonable estimated date
of construction .
By 1927 , John P . Fabrick , manager of the North American
Mortgage Co . , was living here ( he is not listed here in the
1916- 17 directory) .
The original occupant of the house was probably Frank W .
Benepe , second vice president of the Owenhouse Hardware
Co . , and probably a son of Frank L . Benepe , an important
Bozeman businessman of the late 19th and early 20th centuries
( see Main St . Historic District) . Benepe probably remained
into the 1920 ' s .
