421 W . Koch
1985 revision
Matt Cohen , surveyor
Though of marginal individual significance due to near
complete alteration of the fenestration , this house is
nevertheless a very important element in the streetscape
because of its imposing form and massing , which has not been
altered . The house is one of the few examples of the
Four Square house type in Bozeman , and one of only three in
the district . It is the westernmost of a very cohesive
streetscape of five diverse pattern book houses , the others
being 401 , 407 , 411 , and 417 W . Koch .
John L . Hartman , a local carpenter and farmer , probably
built the house , and was probably the original owner and
occupant . Hartman had previously lived across the street
in 426 W . Koch . By 1927 , the large house was in use as
the Pinewood Private Hospital for "medical and osteopathic
patients " , under the management of Mrs . Mildred C . Fishleigh .
The hospital is not listed in the 1925 City directory .
