Purdum, 1914 PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance, noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials.Discuss significant architectural features. This two-story single-family residence has a square plan with an enclosed front porch to one corner. The roof overhang from the central gable roof projects to the front porch and its returning eaves forms the hipped roof of the porch. There are small dentils over the entrance to the porch. There is also an attached former carriage house that has been screened in to the west, the southwest corner upstairs has been screened in as a sleeping porch, and there is a two-bay garage attached to the rear with a hipped roof. The windows in the structure are 9/1 double-hung with broad window casings , and the porch features a large fixed window. The frame construction is finished with bevel clapboard on the first level and with coursed wooden shingles. on the second story. The structure sits on a concrete foundation with a broad water table board at the foundation line. The gable-hipped combination roof is covered with green asphalt shingles and features exposed rafters and broad overhanging eaves. There is an exposed brick chimney to the west and another chimney in the center. The axis of the roof is perpendicular to the street. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,Important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site and surrounding area lend the property significance. This property is significant because this residence is associated with a person important in Bozeman history, Fred F. Willson. Son of General Lester Willson, an early Bozeman resident , Willson was born in 1877 in Bozeman. He attended Columbia University in architecture and studied two years abroad. He first practiced with C.S. Haire in Helena. In his large Bozeman practice from 1910-1956, he designed many public commerical and residential buildings. He designed this house for a Bozeman dentist, R.C. Purdum. This structure is potentially eligible for the National Register because of its historical associations and because of its architectural significance. 1 INTEGRITY: Assess the degree to which the structure/site,and surrounding area accurately convey the historical associations of the property.
