An excellent example of eclectic, turn of the century architecture in Bozeman, and the most
significant residential use of pressed stone in the city, this unique house is
independently eligible for the National Register due to its architectural significance.
The house was built between 1904 and 1910 for James H. Harris, proprietor of J.H. Harris &
Co. , in a partnership with J. Henry Quade and Thomas L. Colbern. The business was
advertised as "The Exclusive Shoe Store" in the 1910-11 City Directory. Harris served as
the city Clerk and Recorder by 1927. By 1933, he had left Bozeman, and Mrs. Iva Lutes, the
widow of Gardner Lutes, a fieldman for the Gallatin Valley Seed Co. , was living here. A
replacement front door is the only detriment to this otherwise very well preserved house.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION.-
This detached, one--and-one:-half story, single-family, cast concrete block residence has a
basically square plan with an engaged porch recessed into the front, northeastern corner
and the porch features a gable overdoor and Doric column porch supports. The asymmetrical
facade features one-over-one double-hung windows and fixed windows. There is a half
hexagonal bay on the first story on the east elevation. The gable end of the north
elevation features a triplet of one--over-one double hung windows with a small, wooden half
-circle above the center window which gives the impression of a Palladian window. The
concrete block and frame construction has decorative wood shingles in the gable ends and
sets on a concrete block foundation. The gable-hipped combination roof is covered with
asphalt shingles. and has an interior brick chimney. The axis of the main roof is
perpendicular to the street. The house retains an extraordinarily high degree of historic
architectural integrity, and, with the exception of the replacement of the original
entrance door, there have been no significant modifications to the exterior.
