This detached one-and-one-half story single-family residence has a rectangular
plan with a flush front entry and 4/6 and 9/1 double-hung windows with arched
decorative trim above. The frame construction is finished in stucco and rests on
a concrete foundation. The gable roof is covered with brown asphalt shingles
and features dormers and overhanging eaves , as well- as two brick chimneys , one
covered with stucco. The axis of the main roof is perpendicular to the street.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,Important events,andlor historical patterns associated with the structure/site
and surrounding area lend the property significance.
This property is significant because St. James Episcopal Church Rectory is
part of the early Bozeman religious community. The brick rectory was built
next to the frame church used by the Episcopalians from 1876 to 1889-90
until the building of the present church.
This structure is potentially eligible for the National Register because
of its historical significance and because of its architectural significance.
INTEGRITY: Assess the degree to which the structure/site,and surrounding area accurately convey the historical associations of the

The historic integrity of this property has been retained due -to the survival
of original design and materials and continuity of use, setting and location.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance,

This two-story church has a rectangular plan with a bell tower to one side
and an arched door at the bottom of the tower. Windows are fixed stained glass
and there are arched opening at the top of the bell tower, as well as a round
window in the gable end. The bearing wall construction is finished in cut sandstone
and rests on a cut stone foundation. The gable roof is covered with grey asphalt
shingles and black shingles on the tower portion. The axis of the main roof is
perpendicular to the street.

This property is significant because the St. James Episcopal Church is part
of the early Bozeman religious community. Designed by George Hancock of
Fargo, North Dakota, an architect of other Bozeman buildings in 1889, the
Church was completed in 1890. The. Episcopal community organized in Bozeman
in 1868 and met in a variety of buildings until remodeling a frame structure
in 1876.
