This detached two-story single-family residence has an irregular -plan with a distinctive entrance porch with a- sharp gabled roof supported by a -series of turned wood posts front -to back on each side of the entry door. The gable end over the entry door is arched and the entrance is- off-center - with double-hung and fixed windows throughout the house. There are several stained glass windows and a shed-roofed dormer above the front entrance. The main-floor windows have flat-roof overhangs supported by gingerbread brackets. Th onstruction rests on a rubble stone foundation and th a roof imbricated gable ends. There is an exterior brick chimney, an ou uildings include a garage and a studio. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,Important events,and/or historical patterns assoclated with the structure/site and surrounding area lend the property significance. This property is significant because this residence is associated with a person important in Bozeman history, Samuel W. Lewis. Lewis was born in the West Indies in 1832. Following the banker trade to San Francisco, he came to Montana- and to Bozeman in 1868. He built several rentals , including two houses at 209 and 211 South Tracy in 1879 and this house at 308 South Bozeman about 1880-1882. He was one of the few blacks in Bozeman during these early years. He dies in 1896. (The two rentals on South Tracy were built by Byron Vreeland, a local builder-architect) . n 1/v ' This structure is potenti� -I,(y elfig-ib-I-e for the National Register because of its historical associations and because of its architectural significance.
