STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE:

This small Queen Anne style house is individually eligible for listing in the National
Register due to its architectural significance. Although one of numerous modest houses
built during the early 20th century 'in Bozeman, this house is unusual for .its Queen Anne
style detailing, most notably the ornate gable screen. Bozeman has few examples of this
style due to an economic depression during the 18901s, the Period of the style's greatest
popularity in Montana. This house, however, was not built until about 1912 by Frank
Kolble, a tailor for the V.J. Bittner Clothing store. The family occupied the house into
the 19401s. Other members of the family to live here were Minnie Kolble, Frank Kolble's
wife, and John Kolble. The fact that the house was located so far from other residences
when it was built and the existence of the barn at the rear of the property suggest that
the house may have been a associated with a small subsistence farming operation.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: -
This detached, two-story, single family residence has a square plan with a hipped roof
front porch supported by turned columns. The one-bay facade is symmetrical and consists of
a central front entrance with one-over-one double hung windows and a large cottage window
-with transoms above. The frame construction is finished in ship lap siding with shingles in
the gable ends and rests on a rubble foundation. The gable roof is covered with green
asphalt shingles and features returning, boxed, overhanging eaves and decorative woodwork
in the gable ends. There is a shed-roofed dormer on the north elevation and two brick
chimneys, one at the northwest corner and one at the center of the building. The axis of
the roof is perpendicular to the street. A gable roofed addition has been added to the
rear. Outbuildings include a barn.
