PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance,
noting additions, alterations, and changes in materials.Discuss significant architectural features.
This detached seven-story condominium structure in the Art Deco Style has elements
of Modernistic style with Classical references. It has a square plan with a
three-arched front entrance similar to an Italian balcony/window frieze on the
upper floor front facade, and a terra cotta band just below the coping. The
five-bay facade is symmetrical and consists of the central entrance with
vertical 5-paned semicircular windows above the entrance doors. The remaining
windows in the structure are 1/1 double-hung with six central windows in the
seventh story having brick arched keystones. The bearing wall construction
is finished in brick with glazed terra cotta and rests on a concrete foundation
with granite veneer. The roof is flat. This building is an excellent repre-
sentation of an unchanged structure, but there has been restoration work on
the interior completed in 1979-1982.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons, important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site
and surrounding area lend the property significance.
This property is significant because it is associated with a person important
in Bozeman history, Fred F. Willson. Son of General Lester S. Willson, an early
Bozeman pioneer, Willson was born in 1877 in Bozeman. He attended Montana
State College for two years and graduated from Columbia University in 1902.
He studied for two years abroad and upon his return, Willson practiced archi-
tecture with C. S. Haire in Helena and Butte. In his long practice from
1910-1956, he designed many public, commercial and residential buildings.
The Baxter Hotel opened March 2, 1929, after being under construction for two
years. The hotel was named in honor of Robert A. Baxter, Gallatin County
pioneer. The hotel was financed by the Bozeman Community Hotel, Inc. with
Eugene Graf, President; L. W. Trevitt, vice-President, E.J. Parken, treasuer
and E.E. MacMahon, secretary. An executive committee was composed of
community leaders and 250 additional stockholders. H.J. Hamill was the general
contractor and Fred F. Willson, the architect. Willson did a remodeling of
the lounge in 1940, renamed the Robin Lounge.
This structure is potentially eligible for the National Register because
of its historical associations and because of its architectural significance.

property.
The historic Integrity of this property has been retained due to the survival
