PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structurelsite,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance,
noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials. Discuss significant architectural features.
This two-story single-family residence has an irregular plan with a wrap-
around hip-roofed porch across the front. The porch features a spindle railin ,
wood posts, and a 4" lap siding -around the tkirting. The facade it asymmetri-
cal' ano features 1/1 double-hung windows and fixed with elaborate stained
glass transoms. The frame construction is finished in 4" beveled siding on
the first floor, shingles on the second floor (flared out at second floor
line) and vertical wainscoting in the gable ends with 1" x 4" lattice covering
The structure sits on a cut stone and concrete foundation. The gable roof
is coVered with cedar shingles 'and features gable-roofed dormers. ` The
axis of the roof is perpendicular to the street. There is a central brick
chimney. .

.This property has long been associated with.W.W.Wylie, founder of the
Yellowstone Transportation Company. William Wylie was born in 1848 in Ohio,
coming to Bozeman in 1878 where he was superintendent of public schools for
three years and principal of the Bozeman Academy for four years. He was also
superintendent of instruction in 1886-1887 for the Montana Territory. During
these years he-began taking parties through the newly established Yellowstone
National Park. This.,enterprise grew into the Yellowstone National Park
Transportation . Company He purchased this home in 1897 and lived there
until 1910. In 1913 the house was sold to the adjacent Grand Avenue Christian
Church for use as a parsonage.
This structure qualifies as a' contributing element within a potential historic
district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Civic
Phase of Bozeman 's historic/architectural development.
