Whereas, as an outcome of the Morrill Act of 1862 and the efforts of Bozeman’s founding mothers and fathers,
the institution that is today known as Montana State University was established by Montana Governor John
Rickards on February 16, 1893, as the state’s land-grant institution; and
Whereas, Montana State University – first known as the Agricultural College of the State of Montana – opened
two months later with three faculty members and was attended by five male students and three female
students; and
Whereas, over the coming years, the institution relocated from its first temporary home in a county high
school building on Main Street to a site on 200 acres south of Bozeman, a campus that today has grown to
more than 120 buildings; and
Whereas, Montana State University is today recognized world-wide for its excellence and innovation in
education and its prominence in research among leading public research universities, and this marriage of
excellence in student education at a major research university is a factor in its current enrollment of 16,703
students, which makes it the largest university in Montana; and
Whereas, as central to its land-grant mission, MSU serves all Montanans through public outreach endeavors
that include the dissemination of knowledge, through Extension programs and the Montana Agricultural
Experimental Stations, through dynamic public service opportunities in the community for its students and
staff, and by offering a broad range of intellectual activities, athletics and entertainment events that enrich our
community; and
Whereas, since its inception, Montana State University has graduated more than 120,000 students who, for
generations, have been valuable members of their communities as public servants, as entrepreneurs, as valued
and skilled employees, as teachers, health care providers, as soldiers in the nation’s armed forces, as law
enforcement officers and as citizens that enrich our community, state, nation and our democracy;
Now, therefore, in recognition of Montana State University’s 125th Anniversary, I, Cynthia Andrus, the Mayor
of Bozeman, proclaim that the City of Bozeman and Montana State University will continue their legacy of
cooperation and collaboration for the benefit and growth of the community for many more years to come.
Signed this 12th day of February, 2018 in Bozeman, Montana.
