Madam Mayor, Commissioners, and Staff,
The Board of Directors of Galla10 Alliance for Pathways (GAP) has asked me to write to you
regarding errors and omissions on the proposed strategic plan. Previously Ralph Zimmer
wrote to you with suggestions but they have not been incorporated into the plan.
1) On item 4.5.d Housing and Transportation Choices – the following makes
absolutely no sense: “Paint shared lane markings and strategic crosswalks for cyclists to
encourage alternative means of transportation.”
Cyclists do not use crosswalks unless they dismount to walk across as a pedestrian does.
Shared “lane" markings are just a tiny portion of the facilities that are needed to
accommodate non-motorized traffic. You need more inclusive wording that embraces
separated shared use paths and other innovations.
Suggested wording change: "Infrastructure for Non-motorized Transportation.
Plan and create safe, interconnected bicycle, sidewalk, and separated shared-use
path networks to encourage non-motorized travel by both impaired and non-
impaired individuals."
2) 3.4.d refers to "separated pathways going from town to the trailheads". That
statement is limiting. We need similar trails to allow commuting to other areas such as
the YMCA and the proposed separated shared use pathway from 7th street to Belgrade.
Suggested wording change: after the word "trailheads” add the words “and
local destinations"
These should be simple corrections to make, but we would support any wording that PTS or
BABAB suggests.
