HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-29-18 City Commission Packet Materials - A1. Appointments to the Zoning CommissionCommission Memorandum
REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission
FROM: Brenda Sweeney, Deputy City Clerk
Robin Crough, City Clerk
SUBJECT: Appointment(s) to the Zoning Commission
MEETING DATE: January 29, 2018
MEETING TYPE: Action
RECOMMENDED MOTION: I move to appoint up to two members to the Zoning
Commission with terms ending February 28, 2020.
BACKGROUND: There are two vacancies on the Zoning Commission. The City Clerk’s Office
has recently discovered a discrepancy between the official term end dates in Bozeman Municipal
Code and what has been appointed in the past. In order to correct the terms, there will be one
month added to the current terms, including these appointments, changing the end dates from
January 31 to February 28 of the relevant term year.
Two new applications have been received; one by a current Planning Board member and one by
a new applicant. The Zoning Commission was re-created under Ordinance No. 1500, to establish
procedures for the administration of the municipal zoning ordinance within the City limits.
Resolution No. 3312 then established the membership of the Zoning Commission.
According to Resolution No. 3312:
The Zoning Commission shall consist of five members appointed by the City Commission.
Members of the board shall serve two-year staggered terms. Persons of legal age may be
appointed to the board. All members must be residents of the City of Bozeman.
The Zoning Commission currently has two vacancies. The City Clerk’s Office has received
two applications, with their relevant qualifications indicated below.
1. Two positions expiring February 28, 2020 | Qualifies: P. Spitler, C. Scott
Applicants:
Paul Spitler
117
Christopher Scott
Deputy Mayor Chris Mehl is the City Commission liaison for this board.
Zoning Commission appointments are City Commission appointments.
ALTERNATIVES: As suggested by the City Commission.

(○) No
Please explain your relevant qualifications, interests and experiences:
I have worked with Gallatin County as a Planner for the last 15 years. Prior to working with Gallatin County I
worked 5 years with the Town of Truckee Planning Department in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains.
During my time as a Gallatin County Planner, I have sat on the Bozeman Area Transportation Coordination
Committee as the County Planning Department Representative and have participated in the last two
Bozeman Area Transportation Studies. I have also sat on the statewide Montana Association of Planners
Board. My interest in wanting to be on the Zoning Commission as a Bozeman property owner and resident
is to maintain and expand everything Bozeman has to offer, such as a clean and healthy environment,
access to recreational opportunities such as trails, bikeways, parks, and open space, and its robust
economy. With Bozeman’s inevitable growth I would strive to find balance in allowing proper growth while
trying to maintain and expand Bozeman’s desirable character.
