No minutes are available for the 8.8.17 HPAB meeting due to audio/video technical difficulties. While the recording

2. Discussion of topics for board retreat
Board Objectives
06:44:06 PM (00:41:03) Compliance of the Rainbow hotel sign in the Midtown district was discussed in response to a
Board Member’s question. A summary of all items discussed thus far was provided.
06:46:07 PM (00:43:04) A summary of what has been discussed thus far was provided.
06:48:15 PM (00:45:12) Board Members discussed, at length, their goals for the retreat, the length of time
anticipated that would be necessary to go in-depth with the topics being discussed, a proposed vision for the
retreat and dates. Planner Saunders and Historic Preservation Specialist Gonzalez speak about their availability
and the amount of time Gonzalez needs to get up to speed.
06:57:55 PM (00:54:52) A date was set for the board retreat.
06:58:37 PM (00:55:34) A Board Member asked if there were any projects on the horizon that were “request for
demolition” projects. Planner Saunders responded.
06:59:53 PM (00:56:50) A time was set for the board retreat. Location unknown at this time.
07:01:39 PM (00:58:36) A question regarding a public meeting rules and quorums was posed.
3. 07:02:36 PM (00:59:33) Recruitment of additional board members
07:04:29 PM (01:01:26) A discussion of what qualifications the potential new board member has and what role she
could fill in the board was had in conjunction with when she could potentially become appointed to the board.
07:06:06 PM (01:03:03) The board asked Gonzalez to assist in finding an architect to join the board.

1. Board questions and general discussion
07:08:31 PM (01:05:28) Board Member Jeanne mentioned that why the board does not review demolitions should be
discussed more. Planner Saunders stated that they would have to do more research to identify when the board duties changed.
Another board member agreed and it was suggested to add that to the retreat meeting agenda.
07:12:59 PM (01:09:56) A summary of the meeting and next steps was provided.
07:13:28 PM (01:10:25) Planner Saunders mentioned that the Planning Department has received an application to restore
the Ellen Theatre marquis.
07:15:38 PM (01:12:35) The “historic” nature of the building on the corner of Black and Olive was discussed, including
the criteria of what constitutes a historic building and why that building was not considered “historic”.
07:17:56 PM (01:14:53) A question about how to make public comment as a board member was asked and when to
disclose that information (as an individual or as a board member).
