Dear City Commissioners,
I am writing to express my concern at what appears to be the creation of an at-large dog area
encompassing the western side of Lindley Park, as reported in the Daily Chronicle on December 24.
In looking at the Bozeman Municipal Code I can not find Lindley Park listed as a restraint-free area (see
Bozeman Municipal Code 8.02.080, as is posted on signs in Lindley Park).
Further, I can find no resolutions by the City Commission to create such an area, as is outlined in the Code.
I know of no notifications or open discussion concerning this significant change in character of Lindley Park.
Of several concerns, one that comes to mind immediately is the the safety of the users of the little sledding
hill--typically young families and small children--that is a traditional use of Lindley Park. I don't believe their
interests are served by encouraging loose dogs in the area.
Yesterday, as my wife and I strolled through the snow in the park, we were confronted by three loose dogs
which were only marginally controlled by their owners. Instead of an enjoyable walk in the park we were
put in the position of fending off these animals. Uncomfortable confrontations with dog owners can easily
become a part of this sort of encounter.
I am asking that consideration be given to the traditional uses of the park, and that protocols outlined in
the City Municipal Code be followed in the creating of at-large dog areas.
