Hello Commissioners,
I read in the paper about a decision you are considering regarding the distance between medical marijuanna
dispenseries and schools. Currently, it is 1,000 feet restriction and you are considering decreasing that to 400 feet.
While I completely agree that medical marijuanna is helpful for people with specific medical issues, it is also
harmful for our youth. I know that a dispensary is not supposed to sell children, and certainly not if they do not
possess a “green card”, there are two concerns that add to this picture.
1. Anyone who is 18 at a high school can and do get a “card”.
2. The school fights hard and spends significant resources to try to keep kids away from using drugs. Having a
dispensary right near the school develops a social norm that marijuanna is good for you and ok to use.
I know that there is limited space in the Bozeman donut, but there is plenty of space in our County. There is no need
to have a dispensary downtown or near the schools.
As you know, before I came to CSC, I worked in primary prevention and environmental policies that encourage or
discourage drug and alcohol use for kids. This is really important and I would be happy to talk with any of you
further.
Respectfully,
