Ultimately awarding approximately sixty million acres to facilitate the venture, the charter provided the largest land grant ever given to a railroad and made the Northern Pacific "the single greatest American corporate undertaking of the nineteenth century," according, to historian Robin W. Weeks.1 The Gallatin Valley's reputation as "the granary of Montana", together with its geographic proximity to Bozeman Pass and the large coal reserves of the neighboring Trail Creek area, attracted the attention of the railroad.2 The Northern Pacific Railroad arrived in Bozeman March 21, 1883. The Milwaukee Road, with station in Bozeman, passed through western Montana in 1908. As growth in population and economy of Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley increased so did the facilities of the areas railroads. The east end of Bozeman became a warehouse center with railroad freight delivery in the late 19th and early 20th century. The Northern Pacific Freight Office and Warehouse, located at the northeast corner of E. Main St. and Wallace Ave, was constructed sometime between 1904 and 1912. The 1912 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map of Bozeman (sheet 21) shows the first indication of the one-story brick railroad freight office and warehouse. The building continued the same function under railroad ownership through the 1960s. The 1956-57 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map (sheet 23) shows the same building in the same location, configuration, dimension, orientation to railroad tracks as the original. Sanborn maps of building show original railroad spur tracks (2) on the north side of building and one terminating near east end of building.
