Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features
to correlate with the Site Map.
Building is a 1-1/2 story single family residence with a rectangular plan and a rear rectangular addition (rear addition has
been recently removed for remodeling) the one-bay facade consists of a central hipped roofed entry (recently removed)
with transomed front entrance flanked by one double hung 2/2 window and one fixed window with upper light of leaded
colored glass. The front (south) entry porch is currently removed for remodeling. The frame construction is finished with
Dutch-Cove siding that appears to be original. Window trim has cut detailing and molding. The original foundation is a
combination of ruble and concrete (currently being removed and replaced). The gable roof has exposed ends on the east
and west and is covered with asphalt shingles. Roof features overhanging eaves and one interior brick chimney. During
subject survey, house is being lifted off of original foundation to created new basement and foundation. Basic form of
building is being maintained except for the addition of a front-gabled pent in the center of the original roof line. Rear
addition is being removed and replaced with 1 1/2 story projection with gable roof running north-south, perpendicular to
main portion of house. All original siding, windows, doors, and front porch have been removed and replaced by newer
materils.
Original foundation made of rubble and concrete, removed and replaced with reinforced concrete in 2015.

The gable roof has exposed ends on the east and west and is covered with asphalt shingles. Roof features overhanging
eaves and one interior brick chimney. Remodeling in January of 2015 includes re-framing of entire roof with the addition of
a front-gabled pentiment in the center of the original front roof line.

Front (south) porch has been removed and rebuilt with some variation to size, scale, design, and materials. Large,
detached recent garage with gable roof is located at northwest corner of property.

Avant Courier (January 10, 1884, April 17, 1884) discusses original construction of building by Archibald and Josephine
McDonald.
The 1884 Sanborn Map for Bozeman does not include the area east of Church Street, so does not depict any of the
buildings then on that part of East Mendenhall St. Similarly, the 1889 and 1890 Sanborn Maps only show the area of the
western three lots of the subject block of East Mendenhall St, but not the eastern portion where the property is located. The
subject property first appears on the 1891 Sandborn Map of Bozeman (Sheet 13), with the form of the existing 1 1/2-story
dwelling structure situated at the southeast corner of then labled Block 105, fronting what was then labeled as Marcellus
(Mendenhall) Street. Subsequent years of Sanborn Maps indicate the same structure with only subtle changes in the form
of small rear and side porches.
There are no Bozeman City Directories for the 1880s, so information regarding McDonald's original residency at the
property cannot be documented. The 1902 Bozeman City Directory lists "Archie McDonald" as a resident of 223 (currently
541) E Mendenhall, and lists his occupation as a "capitalist".
The 1900 U.S. Census for Bozeman, Montana, (5th Ward, Enumeration District No. 187, Sheet No. 8, June 5, 1900), lists
"Arch" and "Josephine McDonald" as owning and living in their house at 223 E Mendenhall Street. Archibald McDonald is
listed as being born in Scotland in 1839, and becoming a naturalized citizen of the U.S. 1856. His occupation is listed as
"farmer."

Recent major remodeling of the building, including foundation and basement construction, redesign and reconstruction of
entire roof form and construction, reconstruction and modification of front porch, and installation of new windows, all
greatly decreases the level of historic integrity in the areas of design, materials, and workmanship. Hence, the building
lacks substantial original integrity to justify a recommendation to nominate the property to the National Register of Historic
Places. All recent changes and removal of historic fabric does not follow the U.S. Secretary of Interior Standards for
historic rehabilitation.
