Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features
to correlate with the Site Map.
The property is a one-story commercial structure with a simple rectangular plan. The building is constructed of dressed
limestone blocks. The façade is asymmetrical and consists of one bay with windows and recessed central entry-way on
west end with larger opening on east. The main (front) stone building measures 65 ft 12 in +/- along the north wall and 79
ft 3 in +/- along the west wall. A concrete block addition has been constructed at the rear south side and measures 30 ft 2
in +/- n/s. Within the concrete block addition to the south can be viewed the former south elevation of the stone building,
complete with former window openings (now blocked). The building's east wall abutts with the west wall of the bowling
alley building located immediately to the east at 414 E. Babcock St.
Cut/dressed stone blocks forming the north, west, and south elevations average 2 ft wide by 11 inches high. The stone
wall blocks are of limestone, with formed-concrete lintels over doors and windows. The flat built-up roof is hidden by stone
parapet north and west walls. The parapet walls on the north and west are topped with concrete coping. The stone walls
exhibit regular coursing of different width dressed stones. The top two courses (presumably the parapet portion) have a
smaller vertical dimension than the blocks throughout the walls. A newer cinder block addition is located at the rear
(south), originally having a garage door on the west, now altered to a modern door and window (new address of the rear
addition is 110 S. Rouse Ave.). All fenestration on building is modern, one doorway and one window on west wall shows
presumably original sandstone lintels. All other lintels are concrete. All interiors of both buildings have been modernized,
with new wall positions and surface treatments.
The height of façade wall at the NW corner of the building is 13 feet.
Foundation not exposed. Probably limestone block.
Foundation
Flat, built-up roof, hidden by front and side parapets.

Concrete block building attached to SW corner of structure.

The stone building originally shows on 1884 Sanborn Map as Blacksmith and Wagon Shop located at southeast
intersection of Babcock St. and South Rouse Ave. The 1884 map indicates: "1-1/2 story building (noted to be a Specially
Hazardous Risks (fire)) with shingle roof. Three separate businesses - 'B. Sm' "Wagon Shop' and wood 'Store Rm'. 1 story
wood buildings/porches on west of building and South of building. Three smokehouses (?) on east. Subsequent maps
indicate slight changes in the building dimensions, but most likely due to mapping errors. During the 1920s the building is
noted to be a machine shop then a motor repair (after the arrival of automobiles). By 1943, the building is listed as a place
for manufacturing of mattresses. In 1935, the blacksmith/machine shop located at the address was operated/owned by
Joseph E. Huff. The 1940 Polk city directory indicates the business at the address to be one of Cass Mattress and
Furniture Co.
