Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features
to correlate with the Site Map.
The building is a large detached 1-1/2 story multi-family residence, with rooms in the former attic forming a third floor.
Building exhibits a rectangular plan with large octagonal (five faces exposed) turret room on northwest corner, rectangular
portion of building has gambrel roof with ridge line running east/west, perpendicular to black street. The east and west
ends of the main rectangular mass has exposed gables beneath the mansard roof. The turret has steal pyramidal roof.
Attic portion of turret has recessed dormer window on north side and recent triangular skylights. A single brick chimney
near ridge line at east end of building. Building has newer 1/1 double hung sash windows. wood siding appears to be
newer pressed board composition with recent doors and rain gutters. Roof material is recent green composition asphalt
shingles. North side of gambrel roof has the addition of dormers with recent skylights above. Due to the historical
information indicating the construction of the building was used as a veterinary hospital, the large rectangular mass
beneath the mansard roof would have likely served as a barn with stalls.
Most of foundation is obscured by recent front porch on façade (west), and other elevations. Indications are that foundation
is concrete

The 1908 Polk City Directory for Bozeman (pg. 92) indicates the Gallatin Veterinary Hospital, operated by proprietors
Gardiner & Wheeler, located at 124 Black Ave. at the north corner of Lamme. The street address for the building was later
changed to 108 E. Lamme St. The 1904 City Directory (pg. 383) indicates that H. C. Gardner, veterinarian, had his
business located at 111 W. Main Street.
The 1904 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map of Bozeman (sheet 15) shows a vacant lot at the subject property address. The
1912 Sanborn map (sheet 13) shows a "Veterinary Hospital" at the address. The same building configuration and locations
is shown on the 1927 Sanborn map but is labeled as "3-Apartments). The Sanborn maps show the same configuration and
location of the present building, stated to be a 1 1/2-story building oriented east-west on the property with an octangonal
plan projecting turret on the northwest corner, a 1-story bay on the south elevation, and a 1-story rectangular projecting
porch or room on the south elevation.
Readily available historical information available for the property suggests that the building as it stands today was built as a
veterinary hospital in the same location, configuration, and orientation between 1905 and 1907.

Although the building exhibits qualities of original design as a veterinary hospital (barn) and original location in its setting
within the downtown/rural interface for Bozeman during the turn of the 19th century, it lacks significant elements of
workmanship, materials, and association to be eligible for listing on the National Register. The building has undergone
significant changes in the form of additions, changes to multi-family residences, materials and construction.
