Number the buildings and features to correlate with the Site Map. The existing grain elevator and warehouse complex is made up of five distinct buildings and structures with the terminus of an active railroad spur track (Northern Pacific RR), ending at the west lot line at N Wallace Ave. Building #1 is the first building on that site that still exists today. The building is a detached two-story wood frame structure with drop-cove (Dutch-Cove) siding with stone foundation, located at the far northwest corner of the lot at the corner of N Wallace Ave and E Mendenhall St. The building has a gable roof with ridge line running east-west. The west gable end has large hinged loading loft door at second floor. The basement or crawl space has two vents on north side of the exposed stone foundation. The roof is finished with corrugated metal. The building measures 40 ft 5 in east-west by 24 ft 5 in north-south. One pedestrian door and one sliding loading door are located on the south side. Building #2 is a rectangular one-story wood-framed corrugated sheet metal-clad warehouse building on a concrete foundation. The façade (north) is symmetrical with three bays, with the two side bays having a broken roof-line forming shed roofs to the west and east. The building has a concrete foundation and concrete floor with slight-pitch gable roof, The roof ridge-line runs north-south. The framing of building is wood with a truss roof support system. Three loading doors and one pedestrian door are located on the south side of the building. The west side of building has four small window openings (presently boarded up). The north side of the building, fronting E Mendenhall St, has three larger loading doors with vehicle access, one pedestrian door ,and two windows. The dimensions of Building #2 are 111 ft 5 in east-west by 75 ft 8 in north-south. Building #3 is a smaller rectangular wood-framed metal-clad warehouse adjacent to the east wall of Bulding #2. The building has a symmetrical one-bay façade on the north fronting E Mendenhall St. (con't) >> Building #1 = stone rubble. Other buildings concrete. Foundation Buildings have roofs of either gable or shed form, covered with corrugated or standing-seam metal roofing panels. The first of the buildings on the current site appears on the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps of Bozeman for 1891 (sheet 8), 1904 (sheet 6), 1912 (sheet 21), 1927 (sheet 23), 1927/rev. 1943 (sheet 23), and subsequent maps. The earlier maps label the building as "Cold Storage" or "Refrigeration". Beginning with the 1927/ rev. 1943 Sanborn Map (sheet 23) the one-story wood-frame with metal clad exterior appears on the property (Bldg. #2 and #3). Hence the building was constructed sometime between 1927 and 1943. The configuration of the building is like it is today with a central rectangular mass labeled "Machinery Warehouse" and flanked by two common-wall sheds labeled "Mach'y Shed", one on either the west and east sidesof the main warehouse. The 1957-59 revision of the 1927 Sanborn Map (sheet 23) shows the full compliment of buildings related to the grain elevator, storage structures, and related buildings that are known today. The 1957-59 map labels the complex as the Farmer's Union Grain Terminal Association built in 1948. The buildings depicted include four cylindrical steel grain tanks (each 64 ft high) with a capacity of 37,720 bushels (Bldg. #4), and wood-crib bins within the enclosed elevator building having a total capacity of 52,000 bushels (Bldg. #5). The elevator building has a central mass that extends 6 stories with the two wood-crib bin wings extending 4 stories each. The north side of the elevator building as common-wall projections including a vehicle access/unloading bay, offices, and warehouse storage rooms, all one-story each. A separate detached rectangular one-story wood-framed metal-clad grain storage building (Building #6) is located south of the the elevator building, across the railroad spur track that terminates at the west end of the lot. The Polk City Directory for Bozeman lists the Farmer's Union Grain Terminal Association elevator being located at 24 N Wallace Ave in 1950 (pg 105) listing a Elmer R. In 2014, there are only three. The Ag Depot facitily (known historically as the Farmer's Union Grain Terminal Association) remains as an important elevator, one of the last historic vestiges of its type throughout the state and Gallatin County. The development of this elevator at the terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad aided in the continues development of Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley as one of the primary agricultural centers of Montana. At a time when grain farming was focused on numerous small family farms, local elevators were important as terminals between the farms and the distant centers connected by the railroad. This specific elevator complex is one of the last remaining vestiges of this mid- 20th century operation. NRHP Criteria:XA B XC D See Additional Information PageIntegrity (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) Although this property has experienced some architectural modification it holds strong elements of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association to support a recommendation for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The complex design and functional use of materials, layout, and workmanship is key to interpreting the property's unique history and architecture. The property's association with historic and current railroad lines, the historic industrial/transit areas of Bozeman, and other extant elevators in the area all add to the uniqueness of the property.
