Building designed in a T-shaped plan with small front (south) projection and covered front porch. Both blocks of building are placed under an intersecting T-shaped cross-gabled roof. L-shape porch at southwest corner is covered by L-shape hip roof and extends around southwest corner of building. Building has undergone extensive and complete remodel/reconstruction. Current structure exhibits recent stucco siding on first floor, and verticals board siding on second floor level. New roof, new windows, new decking, and new concrete foundation have been added or upgraded. Rear (north) one-story projection near northwest corner has been completely reconstructed with new materials. New concrete foundation. Foundation New composition shingles with the addition of modern skylights. Roof Front L-shaped porch is situated at west projection of façade and extends a short distance around southwest corner and along portion of west wall of building. The 1904 Sanborn Map indicates the portion of the lot vacant. The large corner lot with the centrally located dwelling (541/formerly 223 E Mendenhall) built by Archibald McDonald appears on the 1904 map. Polk City Directory for Bozeman, 1912, indicates the first listing for any residents at the address of 227 E Mendenhall St. A Louis Shafer, a machinist, is listed as "rooms" at that address (pg. 149). Additionally, the same directory lists Mary L. Shafer (widow of Charles F. Shafer, as a "boarder" at the same address. The name of Mary Shafer does not appear on the U.S. Census for Bozeman in 1910. Available information indicates that the building most likely did not exist in 1910, but was in use by 1911 or 1912.
