Main, historic service station is a cross-gabled "L" with rectangular brick warehouse at alley. Between the
two is a more modern (post-1960) rear gable projection.

Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features
to correlate with the Site Map.
The building is a 1-1/2 story commercial structure with an irregular plan and a rectangular brick warehouse building to the
rear (north). The rear warehouse is of brick construction with pilasters and flanged glazed terra-cotta coping tiles along the
top of parapet walls. The asymmetrical façade has an off center front entrance with aluminum storefront windows. The
brick construction has been painted on the older section and its foundation stucco over concrete blocks. The roof of the
main (front/south) structure is a cross-gabled layout with flared eaves on the front-facing gable. The structure rests on a
concrete foundation. The axis of the roof is perpendicular to the street. Brick warehouse additions is at alley, north wall has
blocked loading door plus one entrance door. The rear projection between the front main structure and the rear warehouse
is rectangular with gable ridge running north-south and with three dormers.
Warehouse dimensions:
North wall: 48'6" east/west
East wall: 24'5" north/south.
South wall (butts north side of main building, measurement taken from northeast corner of brick building): 26'10" east/west.
Concrete.
Foundation
The intersecting gable roof has flared eaves on the original structure and on the one-story warehouse has a flat roof.
Roof
The brick warehouse was historically an outbuilding at the alley, but was joined to the front building by way of the
intermediate projection, sometime after 1960.

Nelson Story began the Story Motor Supply business located on the south side of W. Main St. during the teens. That
business had no service or "gas filling station" at that location. The Bozeman Sanborn Fire Insurance Map of 1927 (sheet
23) shows a smaller rectangular one-story gas+oil filling station w/ warehouse at alley. The 1943 revised Bozeman
Sanborn map (sheet 23) shows a 1 1/2-story building in the same location, configuration, and dimensions as is present
today (with only front building, no rear projection). 1957-59 and 1960 revisions of the Sanborn maps are the same as the
1943 map, with no rear addition between the main building and the rear warehouse.
The Polk City Directory for Bozeman show the following information: 1918 (pg. 137), 1922 (pg. 118), and the 1925 )pg.
124), all list the Story Motor Supply Inc, having a "Filling Station" located at 549 E Main street. the City Directory for 1916
(pg. 157) only shows Story Motor Supply in 400 Block of W Main, with no service station.
Readily available information suggests that the current rear warehouse was built sometime prior to 1927, and the front
building was build sometime between 1935 and 1940.
