Number the buildings and features to correlate with the Site Map. The building is a single-family detached one-story dwelling designed and constructed in the Queen Anne Cottage Style. The building form is a front-facing L-shape with entry on the interior angle of the "L". The two-bay façade is comprised of the entry approach to main door into the house in the main block beneath a hipped roof. The covered walkway leading to the entry door exhibits a recent/modern rounded (semi-circular vault) roof supported at the end by two tapered wood posts atop concrete supports faced with brick veneer. The entry porch is covered by a shed roofed with a single fixed window on the east wall. The original entry door has been replaced with a metal-framed full glass commercial door. The concrete walk leads to a concrete stoop with one step. The second bay on the west side of the façade is formed by a projecting gable- fronted bay with returning eaves and a recently remodeled large circular window with semi-circular framed awning detail replicating the new curved porch roof. The frame construction is finished in drop-cove (Dutch-cove) wood siding that appears to be original to the structure. The front gable-end is covered with random-width wood shingles with approximately 6" reveal. The north (rear) side of the building has a one-story rectangular projected addition with a slightly sloping shed roof. The addition has an entry door on the east side and three modern sash windows on the north elevation. Foundation is hidden by recent brick planters and veneer. New replacement foundation is presumed to be concrete. Foundation The main block of the building has a hip roof with a brick chimney at the center. The front "L" projection is covered with a gable roof, covered with wood shingles Roof A small detached wood-frame garage/shed with original drop-cove siding, and 2-over-2 sash windows, is located near the northeast corner of the main structure. The west wall of building has a single entry door, with a double hinged garage door on the north elevation. The garage has a gable roof with ridge line perpendicular to E Mendenhall St. Porches/Outbuildings MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 4 Property Name: Site Number: 24 533 E Mendenhall St Bozeman Original front window has been replaced by 6-ft diameter round fixed window centered in front bay. The previously published Sanborn Map for 1891 shows no such building on the large lot owned by Archibald McDonald. The 1902 Polk City Directory for Bozeman (pg. 140) lists Arthur Herring, a fireman for the Northern Pacific Railroad as the resident at 219 (later 533) E Mendenhall St. Also in the 1902 directory, a Joseph Herron, a clerk for F.A. Maxwell, is listed as a boarder at the same address. From readily available information, it is estimated that the building on the subject property was built by McDonald sometime prior to 1902, but after 1891.
