Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features
to correlate with the Site Map.
The building is a one-story commercial structure with a rectangular plan. The original façade with original central recessed
entry on the south (Main Street side) has been extensively altered with the elimination of the original store entrance and
the addition of three large fixed windows. Current façade/entrance is on the west wall with an asymmetrical layout of entry
vestibule and modern windows. Vestibule has standing seam metal gable roof. Remainder of building has original flat built-
up roof. Original construction of building is board formed concrete. Face of south and west walls is currently finished with
brick and stucco, recently applied. The structure rests on a concrete foundation. All original design features have been
obscured or obliterated. Building shares portion of east wall common to 539 E Main St.

Information resented in 1984 property survey indicate the building was built by H. Seigel in 1913. 1912 Sanborn Fire
Insurance Map for Bozeman (sheet 21) shows a vacant lot at the address of 231 E. Main St. (currently 529 E. Main St.).
The subsequent 1927 Sanborn Map (sheet 23) shows a one-story rectangular building of reinforced concrete with wood
truss roof labeled "General Merchandise) at the subject property.
Polk City Directories for Bozeman show the following information: 1914, no reference for either Seigel, Sawyer, cash store,
general merchandise or grocery at 231 E. Main St.; 1916, pg. 148, lists the Sawyer Cash Store located at 231 E. Main St.;
1918, pg. 129, lists J. M. Sawyer Co., G. H. Mattock, Manager, Wholesale and Retail General Merchandise at 231 E. Main;
1922, pg. 239, lists under the business heading of Grocers/Retail a J. M. Sawyer Co. at 529 E. Main St. (note, all east-west
address numbers in Bozeman were changed between 1918 and 1922).
