Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features
to correlate with the Site Map.
The building is a 1-story single-family residence with complex rectangular plan with rectangular block at northeast corner
(presumably original) and east-west cross-gabled projection forming interior corner on southeast. Façade with entry on
east side has a shed-roofed projected entry porch at the southeast interior angle of the building. The south facing entrance
is flanked on one side by a 1/1 double-hung windows and on the other side by the projecting bay with a fixed window
facing south. The frame construction is finished with composition siding (asbestos?). Sanborn Maps indicate that rear
additions were added after 1960.
The foundation is concrete as well as the front porch stoop.

The cross-gabled roof is covered with composition/asphalt shingles. The interior brick chimneys rise from each bay at the
ridge line of the roof. Roof features overhanging eaves.

Deed records and historic newspaper article (Avant-Courier January 10, 1884) indicate that the residence was built by
Andrew J. Smith in 1883.
Andrew J. Smith arrived in Montana from Missouri in 1872 after serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He
was known as a stockman, running cattle in Gallatin Valley and up the Gallatin Canyon to the West Fork of the West Fork
of the Gallatin River (now Big Sky)(Smith 2002:228). The U.S. Census for 1880 lists Andrew J. Smith, a butcher, residing in
Bozeman with his wive Rachel and 6 children.
The 1902 Polk City Directory for Bozeman, Montana, (pg. 111) indicates a Emma Branch, a teacher, residing at 215 E
Mendenhall St.
