Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features
to correlate with the Site Map.
Building is a detached 1-story single-family residence with an L-shaped plan. The building has a east-west oriented mass
to the rear (north) and north-south oriented projection at the front (south). The front entry is located on west side of the
front projection, presenting an asymmetrical façade to the west. A small concrete stoop and shed roof porch covered with
corrugated metal is located at the southwest corner of the building, serving the entrance. The front porch is supported
simple wood posts. Exterior wall treatment is composed of large-width horizontal pressed boards. The cross-gable roof is
covered with asphalt shingles and features overhanging eaves. The frame construction is finished with pressed board
panels. A brick chimney noted in the 1984 historic property survey has been replaced by galvanized metal stovepipe. An
additional smaller galvanized stovepipe exists at rear.
Unknown, possibly later concrete replacement.
Foundation
"L" shaped cross-gable with ridge line of front portion perpendicular to E Mendenhall Street, and rear ridge line parallel to
street. Roof is covered with modern composition shingles. The cross-gable roof features overhanging eaves.

The front entry is located on west side of the front projection with a small concrete stoop and shed roof porch covered with
corrugated metal.

Windows appear to be of mixture of historic (probably non-original) and recent forms. The front entrance on the west side
of the front wing is flanked by double-hung 1/1 windows and fixed windows.

A one-story "L" shape structure with front porch and entry at the southwest corner, similar to the position and layout of the
existing structure, appears on the 1889 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map for Bozeman (Sheet 2). The Polk City Directory for
Bozeman, Montana, 1902-03,(pg. 121) indicates that a George Crittenden, a farmer, resided at (and most likely owned) the
subject residence then identified as 209 E Mendenhall St. In 1908 and 1910, a Frank Sparlin, a patrolman, is shown to be
residing at the residence. In 1912, a Roy W. Gilam, a teamster, is shown to be living at the house. In the 1916 Polk City
Directory (pg. 161), a Charles E. Thompson, a farmer, is listed as the resident and possible owner of the property then
identified as 209 E. Mendenhall. Limited other historical information has been documented about the property.
