Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features
to correlate with the Site Map.
The building is a detached 2-story duplex residence constructed in a square plan with rear rectangular 1-story addition.
The building's one-bay façade is symmetrical and consists of a central double entrance flanked by two double hung
windows. Main entrance currently has two doors to separate entries to separate duplex units. The present entrance with
porch is covered by a shed roof with central gabled pediment detail above steps, supported by turned posts (possibly not
original). The rear (north) one-story addition to the building is a full-width rear projection with shed roof sloping down to the
north. A full-width recent deck exists at the rear (north side). The frame construction is finished in Dutch-Cove siding and
simple trim around modern double hung windows.
The current structure has been modified since it was moved to the property from across the street sometime after 1984.
1984 survey form and photo indicates the previous (and possibly original) 1-story building in rectangular form with gable
roof and single central entrance.
The current structure has been altered (sometime after 1984) with the installation of new windows, doors, roofing material,
and foundation.
Foundation is recent concrete.
Foundation
Present roof is hipped with short, six foot ridgeline running east/west. Rear addition has shed roof. Present roof covered in
modern composition shingles. Two brick chimneys extend within roofline, one at east and one at west. Roof of previously
configured 1-story building was gable form with ridgeline running east-west.
Roof
Small covered porch over entrance. Porch rood is in shed form with centrally places gable projection over porch entrance
from steps.

This historic structure formerly located at this property is associated with early Bozeman settler Matthias (Cy) Mounts.
Mounts and his brother-in-law, F. F. Fridley, another well-known Bozeman pioneer moved to Bozeman in 1864 and spent
the next 15 years freighting and prospecting around the Bozeman area. Mounts permanently settled in Bozeman in 1879
and owned a saloon for many years (Leeson, pg. 1147). The original building is estimated to have been constructed by
Mounts prior to 1889, and with some changes was extant in 1984 when the previous historic property survey was
completed.
A 1946 aerial photograph (cropped version attached) showing the east end of Bozeman's downtown area, shows the same
building currently located at 511 E Mendenhall St, located directly across the street at 518/520 E Mendenhall St.
Examination of all Sanborn Maps from 1959 back to 1904 show the same two-story duplex structure with one-story rear
full-width attachment located located at 518/520 (210/212 prior to 1918) E Mendenhall St.
Polk City Directory for Bozeman 1902 Show a Truman Crittenden, a boarder, at 210 E Mendenhall (pg. 121), and a
Charles S. Montgomery, a carpenter, as a resident at 210 (pg. 163. The 1902 City Directory also shows James Long, also
a carpenter, residing at 212 E Mendenhall (the east duplex unit)(pg. 153). Polk City Directory for 1900 shows no residents
for the 210 E Mendenhall duplex unit, but James Long is listed as the resident in 212 (pg. 165). None of these names
appear for the same address in the 1892 Bozeman City Directory, but it is impossible to easily search only on the address.
Thus, it is estimated that the original structure from the south side of E Mendall St, that now sits at the property 511 E
Mendenhall, was originally constructed between 1891 and 1899.
