Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features
to correlate with the Site Map.
The lot at the current address of 232 E Mendenhall St has a main residence building (now used for commercial retail and
office) fronting E Mendenhall, with a one-story flat-roofed garage at the south corner that is attached at the garage's south
wall to a two-story historic building located at the south lot line adjacent to the alley. The main building is a 1 1/2-story
single-family residence with a rectangular plan and enclosed gable front porch on the north. The two-bay facade is
asymmetrical and consists of a modern entry door with adjacent large fixed pane windows. East side of building has a
mixture of modern fixed and double-hung windows. The frame construction of the main front building is finished in stucco
with faux trim, also of stucco. The building sits on a concrete foundation also surfaced in stucco. The original one story
building had a gable roof but currently has a second story created by the addition of two massive dormers, one on either
side of the roof ridge. The ridge of the gable roof is perpendicular to E Mendenhall St. The dormer additions are sheathed
with exterior wood paneling. The roof is finished with green asphalt shingles at front and rear, second story addition has
recent standing seam metal roof. The orientation of the roof is perpendicular to E Mendenhall St.
A detached 3-bay garage with flat roof behind short parapet walls sits southeast of the southeast corner or the main
building.
A detached historic rectangular 2-story building, known as a pre-1912 Chinese mercantile/boarding house/lodging/brothel,
is located at the south lot line, on the adjacent lot adjacent to the alley. That structure, recorded on a separate Historic
Property Form as 24GA1793, is actually on a separate lot facing the alley and was known historically as the address of
25A East Main St.
The main building sits on a concrete foundation also surfaced in stucco.
Foundation
The main building has a gable roof with gable ends on the north and the south. Recent modification includes the addition
of two massive dormers, one on either side of the roof ridge. The roof is finished with composition asphalt shingles.
Roof
A detached one-story, three-bay, flat-roofed garage is located to the southeast of the southeast corner of the main
building.

A "Chinese Boarding House" shows on the lot on Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps beginning in 1884. The early boarding
house building is different from the building that exists today and was obviously removed prior to the construction of the
existing building on the property. The earlier building was demolished or moved sometime between 1912 and 1927. The
1927 Sanborn Map shows the subject lot to be vacant on the north (front) half, but the square two-story boarding
house/brothel located at the alley still in its location on a separate lot. The structure with the same layout as exists today
first appears on the 1942 revision of the 1927 Sanborn Map, with the same "Lodgings" building at the alley to the south.
Polk City Directory for Bozeman, 1929 does not have a listing for a structure at then 232 E Mendenhall, indicating that the
lot was vacant without a structure as noted by the 1927 Sanborn Map. The City Directory for 1931 (pg 67) lists the first
entry for the address of 232 E Mendenhall, with the residents listed as Elvis M. and Ida Florer.
From readily available historic documentation, it is estimated that the existing structure at 232 E Mendenhall was
constructed in 1929.
