At that time, pastors served several communities in southwestern Montana from homes and various established locations. In 1896, the first resident pastor, the Rev. A. Lobitz, began regular services in Bozeman. The First Lutheran congregation was organized on July 7, 1929. Pastors J. Henry Gienapp (1929-1930), Otto Misch (1930-1952), and O. F. Wagner (beginning in 1953). The original stone church at the northwest corner of S. Black Ave. and E. Curtiss St. was built in 1935-36. In 1954, during the congregation's 25th anniversary, plans were begun to enlarge the worship and educational facilities for the growing congregation. Property adjacent to the stone church was purchased in April, 1955. Construction of the new sanctuary, office, education rooms, and community hall was begun in September of 1958. The property was first acquired for a permanent church in 1935, following the pre-WWII growth and permanence of the community. As the congregation grew through the mid-twentieth century, so did the church. The construction of the larger sanctuary reflects the increase number of church members and the community driven building with volunteer labor, in a style blending the old and then new styles. NRHP Criteria:XA B XC D See Additional Information PageIntegrity (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The church property as strong elements of location, design, setting, materials, feeling, and association characterized of a neighborhood church close to the downtown area of Bozeman. The exterior stone walls, windows, and almost-pristine interior of the original sanctuary are key elements of the properties retained integrity. The 1959 addition was designed and constructed with sympathy to the original church building, but added characteristic mid-20th centrury styles and materials.
