Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features
to correlate with the Site Map.
The building is a detached single-story church with basement following a general "L"-shaped plan with numerous
projections on the west, north, and east, forming a complex plan with projections.. The basic L-shaped plan is created from
the original smaller stone church (constructed in 1935-36) with gable roof that runs east/west on the south side of the lot. A
larger gabled-end sanctuary was constructed to the north side of the original church in 1959. The later structure has
offices with flat roof on the east and a flat roof extension on the west and a full basement. The original smaller church
building has a south wall with random coursed stones and protruding stones. South wall has four four-light fixed windows
and six basement windows. The nave of the original sanctuary is formed by a smaller gable extension on the west side of
the original church structure. Siding on the west and east walls of the newer addition is vertical lap siding. Newer addition
has concrete foundation. Roof is finished in composition asbestos shingles. Original church structure at south end has
entrance door blocked by present stain glass sign. Interior of original church structure has original post and beam open
truss roof support. West gable end of nave has arched stained glass window flanked by two smaller stain glass windows.
Façade (east) is asymmetrical with original church building on south and gable end entry vestibule projecting to the east.
Entry has two large doors with four small windows above and flanked by 3/3 window panes from ground level to roof line.
Original (1935) church has stone foundation. 1959 addition has concrete foundation
Foundation
Gable roof finished with recent composition shingles.
Roof
Parsonage located to west was built in 1933. Large entry vestibule on east side.

According to the documented history of the First Lutheran Church of Bozeman, Pastors from the Missouri Synod of the
Lutheran Church began serving the Bozeman community in 1885. At that time, pastors served several communities in
southwestern Montana from homes and various established locations. In 1896, the first resident pastor, the Rev. A. Lobitz,
began regular services in Bozeman. The First Lutheran congregation was organized on July 7, 1929. Pastors J. Henry
Gienapp (1929-1930), Otto Misch (1930-1952), and O. F. Wagner (beginning in 1953). The original stone church at the
northwest corner of S. Black Ave. and E. Curtiss St. was built in 1935-36. In 1954, during the congregation's 25th
anniversary, plans were begun to enlarge the worship and educational facilities for the growing congregation. Property
adjacent to the stone church was purchased in April, 1955. Construction of the new sanctuary, office, education rooms,
and community hall was begun in September of 1958.

The Lutheran Church is a significant contributing property to the history of Bozeman community life. The property was first
acquired for a permanent church in 1935, following the pre-WWII growth and permanence of the community. As the
congregation grew through the mid-twentieth century, so did the church. The construction of the larger sanctuary reflects
the increase number of church members and the community driven building with volunteer labor, in a style blending the
old and then new styles.

See Additional Information PageIntegrity
(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association)
The church property as strong elements of location, design, setting, materials, feeling, and association characterized of a
neighborhood church close to the downtown area of Bozeman. The original 1935-36 church building, although subjected
to a limited amount of change during the 1959 addition construction, still retains an abundance of significant architectural
elements, design, and material of the original construction. The exterior stone walls, windows, and almost-pristine interior
of the original sanctuary are key elements of the properties retained integrity. The 1959 addition was designed and
constructed with sympathy to the original church building, but added characteristic mid-20th centrury styles and materials.
