Number the buildings and features to correlate with the Site Map. The building is a detached one-story commercial structure, formerly a single-family residence. Building has flat-roofed attached garage attached to southeast corner of building and projecting south of the south façade of the building. The building is constructed on a square plan with a projecting extension of the former garage now a retail store at the front southeast corner, and a rectangular rear projection (contemporaneous with the building) at the rear (north) elevation. The former garage has a glass-paned flush front entry and fixed storefront windows. The façade (south) of the former residence is largely unchanged and exhibits a symmetrical plan with central door covered by gabled roof and flanked by two multi-light sash windows. The southeast corner of residence building has been obscured by the attachment of the former garage structure. The former residence is frame construction covered with stucco, with a hipped roof with flat top at ridge line and small stucco chimney centered at the ridge line. North side of building has hip roof extension with enclosed porch. Concrete foundation. Foundation The roof of the main part of the building is hipped with and intersecting hip at the rear (north) projection. The main roof is covered with recent composition shingles. The attached garage addition has a flat roof of built up materials which lies perpendicular to Babcock St. Roof Façade on south has centrally positioned single entry door on a low, one-step porch. The porch is covered by a gabled projection with classical elliptical portico. The porch roof is supported by two simple columns. The 1890 map shows the same lot as vacant with no structure. The 1904 Sanborn Map shows a one- story detached residence of the same confirguration and layout as appears today, but without the later added garage and enlarged rear projection. The Polk City Directory for Bozeman for 1902 (pg. 158) shows the first entry for occupants at a residence at the subject address. At that time, a Elwell E. McHemer, with occupation of office and store funiture, is listed as the occupant. From this information it can be estimated that the building was constructed between 1891 and 1901. The 1959 revision of Sanborn Map does not show the added garage.
