The building first appears on the expanded area included on the 1889 Sanborn Map (sheet 2), and depicts the building in its current form as a square plan 1 1/2-story dwelling with various one-story additions and porches. The full-width porch on the west façade of the house does not appear on any of the Sanborn maps indicating it's expansion in size sometime after 1960. The house was constructed sometime between March 1877 and September 1878, by Jacob and Annie Oakwood. Most likely, the original house was built during the summer of 1877. Property Deeds show that Annie Oakwood purchased Lot 38 of Block "I", Original Bozeman Plat, from Davis Willson and wife on March 7, 1877 (Gallatin County Deed Book 15, pg. 63), and Lot 37 of Block "I" from J.H. Taylor et aux on March 8, 1877 (Gallatin County Deed Book K, pg. 241). It is highly unlikely that a structure spanned the two lots prior to 1877, when the said lots were owned by two different people. The Avant Courier newspaper of Bozeman (Sep. 12, 1878, pg. 3, column 2) mentions, "Jake Oakwood is having quite an addition built on the rear of his residence." This addition corresponds to the 1-story rear addition, two side porches on the rear addition, and smaller 1-story rear projection to the east of the dwelling shown on the 1889 Sanborn Map (sheet 2). According to Oakwood's biographical sketch in Stout (1921, Vol. III, pg. 842), Jacob was born in Switzerland in 1829. At the age of about twenty he became a British subject and fought with British forces in the Crimean War in 1852. He moved to Bozeman in 1874 where he worked as a merchant and served as Bozeman's first city marshal. Oakwood passed away in Bozeman in 1885. County property records indicate that Oakwood owned several lots in Bozeman as well as farmland and mining interests throughout the county. Oakwood also owned the Oakwood Saloon and bowling alley in Bozeman, later in partnership as the Mitchell-Oakwood Saloon (Bozeman Weekly Chronicle, Sep. 15, 1886, pg. 3, column 3). The Polk City Directory for Bozeman, 1900-01 (pg 173) lists an Emma Michell, and John Mitchel, saloon worker, as residing at 116 N Bozeman Ave. The 1902 City Directory lists Jacob F (Jacob's son), Emma, and Mamie Oakwood as renters at 116 N Bozeman Ave (pg 167). The Oakwood residence was built in 1877 and is one of the few remaining examples of a private residence from this period within the area of the originally platted area for the town of Bozeman. The history and architectural style of the building is characteristic and highly significant as an example of a single-family dwelling dating to the Village Phase of early Bozeman history (1973-1883). The location, architectural style, and workmanship of the building add to the importance as a remaining example of this historic period. In this regard, the history of the property supports a recommendation for National Register nomination under Criteria A: Association with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of the history of Bozeman and southwest Montana. The property was first developed by Jacob Oakwood, an early Bozeman resident, merchant, mining entrepreneur, and first Bozeman city marshal in the late 1870s. Oakwood passed away in 1885. Oakwood was a significant citizen in the history of early Bozeman and owner of a local saloon business. He was an important supporter of Bozeman’s early development and commerce in the 1870s. His family continued to live at the property after his death. The residence that stands today is the same, in form and materials, as the one originally built in 1877. Historical information exists to fully (con't.) NRHP Criteria:XA XB XC D See Additional Information PageXIntegrity (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The building and property retains significant elements of original location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association to justify nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. All of the rear (east) additions appear to be historic, with very little modern changes to the structure except for roofing material, glazing, etc. InteResources Planning, Inc.505 Bond Street, Suite B Bozeman, MT 59715 406.587.9477 Montana Historic Property Record Bozeman Historic Structures Inventory - 2014 MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD ADDITIONAL INFORMATION PAGE Property Name: Site Number: 24 116 N Bozeman Ave Bozeman (con't. from pg. 7, Significance) support Oakwood’s participation and support of the early Bozeman community and surrounding Gallatin County, and thus supports a recommendation for National Register nomination under Criteria B: Association with lives of significant persons in our past. The Oakwood dwelling exhibits distinctive characteristics of architectural type, historic time period, and method of construction reflecting one style of dwelling construction in Bozeman during the 1870s. The building is only slightly changed since its original construction, leaving intact the core elements of importance. The building is one of the only remaining intact examples of this style and time period within the originally platted area of Bozeman. To this end, the historic architectural characteristics of this property support a recommendation for National Register nomination under Criteria C: Exhibition of distinctive characteristics of type, period, or method of construction, or that represent the work of a master, or that possess high artistic values.
