Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features
to correlate with the Site Map.
The building is a detached one-story commercial structure with an L-shaped plan and rectangular addition to southeast
corner. The building has a large radius curved corner on the northeast that is original building. The building was originally
constructed as a automobile/gas service station, but has been extensively modified with new windows, doors, projecting
bay, and stucco surface. The frame construction is finished with brick veneer and stucco and sits on a concrete
foundation. The present stucco surface was added sometime after the 1984 historic property survey. 1943 Sanborn Maps
show the structure being built of brick and tile. The roof is flat with built-up material behind a short, flat, parapet wall. A
square windowless addition with single entry door is attached to the southeast corner. A small rectangular addition is
attached to the west side of the building. Exterior surface treatment as well as door, vehicle bay door, and windows have
been altered from the original. Service island with gas pumps is no longer present.
Original form, scale, and layout of original 1942 building that remained until after 1960 has been altered by the "L" shaped
addition constructed onto the south and west walls, obliterating original industrial shop windows on those original exterior
walls. Addition of new windows and entry on east and north wall has obliterated original vehicle access door on east wall
as well as original service station entrance door and windows on rounded northeast corner. Recent application of stucco
exterior surface has obliterated original brick and tile construction and surface treatment.

The service station building with large-radius curved corner on northeast appears in 1942 aerial photo of Bozeman Main
Street area, view to west. The 1942 aerial photo, shot at an oblique angle toward the west-northwest, clearly shows the
south and east walls of the building. The photo shows a single-bay vehicle access roll-up door on the south end of east
wall, south of the entrance on the northeast curved corner.
Additionally, the building the original layout (minus the southeast corner bay projection) also first appears on the 1943
revision of the 1927 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map of Bozeman (Sheet 16). The 1960 revision of the 1927 Sanborn Map
(Sheet 16) shows the same building layout and scale as that originally built in 1942. The 1960 map also shows the two-
story brick and frame dwelling located immediately southeast of the southeast corner of the service station in its original
location but labeled as "vacant" and "open".
It is clear from the historic photo and Sanborn Maps, that sometime after 1960 an approximately 20 ft.wide addition was
added to the south side of the building, and an approximately 15 ft wide addition was attached to the full-length of the west
wall of the original building, forming an "L" shaped addition, the footprint that exists today. The described addition on the
south was build with a projection on the east side to form the projection flush with the Rouse Avenue sidewalk that appears
today. Both of the additions blocked the original windows on the south and west walls. The additions would have been
built after the demolition of the two-story dwelling located on the west-half of the lot.
Polk City Directory for Bozeman, 1942, lists no address for 326 E. Mendenhall, however information for the 1942 directory
was compiled in 1941. City Directory for 1944 indicates the building at 326 E. Mendenall is "vacant". City Directories for
1947, 1950, 1954, 1958, as well as intervening and subsequent years list the building as a gas and oil service station
under various owners. The original (1947 and earlier) owner is listed as M. Farmstrom Gas an Oil. M. and Bernice
Farnstrom are listed as residing in the two-story dwelling immediately to the west of the service station at 322 E.
Mendenhall.
