JAG Grant for Missouri River Drug Task Force Commission Memorandum REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission FROM: Steve Crawford, Police Chief Andrea Surratt, City Manager SUBJECT: Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant for Missouri River Drug Task Force MEETING DATE: November 20, 2017 AGENDA ITEM TYPE: Consent RECOMMENDATION: Approve sub-grantee acceptance of the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant in the amount of $93,278.00 and ratify the police chief’s signing of the contract with Gallatin County allocating the use of those funds. BACKGROUND: On July 1, 2017, the Montana Board of Crime Control (MBCC) / US Department of Justice awarded Gallatin County $204,608.00 in federal funds to operate the Missouri River Drug Task Force (MRDTF). As a sub-grantee of the grant, the MBCC award for the City of Bozeman is $65,294.00 and there is a local match requirement of $27,984.00 for a total contract of $93,278.00. The Bozeman Police Department currently has two full time detectives assigned to MRDTF and has been a member since 1990. The mission of MRDTF is to provide a collaborative federal, state and local law enforcement effort to identify, target and address those involved in drug trafficking, manufacture and/or violence. MRDTF utilizes sophisticated long-term investigative approaches, including undercover surveillance operations, the purchase of evidence and information, and electronic surveillance to disrupt and dismantle targeted drug organizations. FISCAL EFFECTS: Approval of this proposal will have a fiscal impact of $27,984.00 and is within departmental budget. ALTERNATIVES: As suggested by the City Commission.
