Upon moving( July) I knew that it would be a busy area but with the resident parking signs located about every 50 feet, I assumed that parking for the people living there was established. I went and paid money to get a permit and one for a visitor to make sure we were following the rules. Ever since I paid, I have had issues parking in front or even on the same block of my house because of parent drop off and pick up. I contacted the parking administration right away about my issues and was told to take a picture or write down the plate number, go online to log the parking complaint. I did not like the idea of patrolling just to ensure that I can park when I come home about 3:30 pm. I started by knocking on windows and asking parents to move. Most people were rude. I have had things thrown at me, been cussed out more often than not, and have had threats to call the cops on me. Honestly I gave up for a couple weeks but constantly having to drive for an extra 20 to 30 minutes just to fight for parking that I paid for, is infuriating. I spoke with Carl, the dean of students, at the High school. He said he would help. I have not seen any change. Over the last 7 days I have entered almost 80 parking complaints. We need help policing that area during morning and afternoon times. Drop off is the main issue. I emailed the head of parking administration Ed Meece last week and received a follow up call the next day. He was not very accommodating or even pleasant to talk to. He stated that they tried to enforce the rules awhile back but it created more chaos so they decided that allowing parents to briefly stop is not an issue. I asked him what I should do if I come home and people are blocking all parking spots and my driveway, which happened the day I emailed him. He said I needed to call the parking administration, which I did the previous day. They sent me to dispatch. Dispatch said they did not handle parking issues and sent me back to parking administration. I then had to leave a voicemail. So here I am, calling for help, being passed around, and still not getting anywhere. I asked Mr. Meece what I should have done. He said that I should call parking, and if I still didn't get anyone I should call 911. Out of respect for emergency services, I will not call 911, but I was appalled to see that parking was willing to waste time for the people of emergency services instead of helping us out. Talking to several people on my street and even a couple blocks behind me, I assure you that it is an issue for multiple people in the area! Over the last week that I have been patrolling for people parked, I have been keeping times on the ones I could. I have found that on average, most cars are there for about 5 minutes. The longest waiters for more than 30, and some for less than 2 minutes, but overall, most were at least 5 minutes. So as a resident, when I come home and tons of parents are only waiting 5 minutes for parking, how is that acceptable to me and to those who live in this area? I understand that a main problem is that the school does not have a drop off area at the 11th entrance. As residence we are asked to pay each year for a parking permit so that we can park by our homes yet parents violating this law are not asked to pay or even given tickets. I also seem to be kept getting pushed off onto another department about this issue. When will the City fix the problem that plagues so many of us? You want us to trust our City and follow the rules and regulations that have been established, but how does one expect us to do that when no one helps us out when there are issues. We just need help with this issue and I hope everyone who reads this can picture coming home to no parking, having to carry your groceries or work or your children upwards of 3 blocks or further to enter your home for the afternoon. No imagine all the kids from the high school that run across 11th to get to their parents vehicles. How long until your child gets hurt, either by slipping, or by a car accident? It's a horrible thought but if you put yourself in my shoes, then you may see the problem differently than you already do.
