Subject: Trail crossing: W. Graf
Dear Chris Mehl--
My name is Rob Maher, immediate past president of the Big Sky Wind Drinkers running club. I
am also a friend of Terry Cunningham (I met you briefly at his birthday celebration on Sept.
23).
I have a request on behalf of the running club regarding the trail crossing on the new
extended Graf Street. I sent a request to Craig Woolard, but did not get a reply, so I am
curious if you have a recommendation on the correct office or individual to receive this
request?
The new extension of W. Graf from S. 3rd. Av. to S. 19th crosses the existing Gallagator
Extension Trail a few blocks west of S. 3rd. For some reason, unlike the Gallagator Extension
Trail crossings south at Brookdale Dr. and Alder Creek Dr. that have a direct mid-block crossing
with curb cuts and markings, the crossing at Graf does not have curb cuts and trail users
appear to be directed to go east 100' to an inconvenient crossing point that is not aligned with
the trail. At this time the sidewalk on the north side of Graf is not completed between the
trail and the apparent crossing, so the situation is even more awkward.
Since this is a heavily-used trail that connects between MSU, Morning Star School, Sacajawea
Middle School, and the rapidly growing Alder Creek area, we would like to request that the
city put in a direct crossing for the trail at Graf. This would match what was done already at
Brookdale and at Alder Creek, and would reflect the equal importance of off-street
pedestrians and cyclists and the on-street motorists in this important link in the community
trail system.
Thank you for your consideration,
Rob Maher
