IN SUPPORT OF A RETURN TO A CIVIL AND FACT-BASED DIALOGUE
Decency, Cheerfulness, Civility, and Open-mindedness
An informal survey of both long-time residents and occasional visitors yields this list of characteristics of a
Bozeman-ite: decent, cheerful, civil and open-minded? Isn’t it more than a bit odd that the self-appointed
personal saviors of Bozeman increasing exhibit decidedly un-Bozeman-like behaviors? Is it saving Bozeman
to repeatedly impugn the integrity of Commissioners, city staff and volunteers? Is it saving Bozeman to
constantly question the motives of anyone who disagrees with you rather than engage in a dialogue from
which we all might learn something? Is it saving Bozeman to ignore plain facts and repeat misleading and
false statements? Is it saving Bozeman to require the Mayor and the City to spend time -- and all citizens of
Bozeman to spend money -- responding to what proved to be a spurious lawsuit? Is it saving Bozeman to
then just continue on with the same misleading statements and falsehoods?
The central argument that “these buildings as proposed would NOT have been possible prior to the
revision” is just not true.
How is it not true? Because the city for DECADES in its published zoning laws and strategic plans has been
explicitly calling for greater density and taller buildings. Why greater density? Because it yields more people
walking to and supporting local businesses, less car traffic and cleaner air, a broader tax base to benefit all
citizens and more accessible housing for those choosing to live with limited car usage.
Certainly the small group of people marching under the yellow banner have a right to speak out. But don’t
they also have a responsibility to speak out in the right way. Is cheerless, disrespectful and uncivil hectoring
really the ‘Bozeman way’?
Perhaps returning to a fact-based and civil dialogue is a better way to save Bozeman?
