As a regular swimmer at the Swim Center, I have watched the overall use of the pool increase.
As this has transpired public swim lanes have decreased, while swim teams lanes have increased. It appears that they are given priority of pool space. What is forgotten is that we public swimmers are also paying patrons! We deserve a fair amount of lanes. This is a major problem that leads to the “space” problem. There needs to be a balance.
When lanes are busy it can be frustrating, due to fellow swimmers not being in the correct speed lane, not understanding how to let people pass, not following the arrows or just not following pool etiquette. This is a safety issue! Very rarely have I seen a lifeguard addressing any of these
issues. I have never understood why lifeguards do not address this. They observe this. It should
be treated immediately as someone diving into the shallow end. A little education for everyone will keep lanes moving and allow for fulfilling swims. I have swam with 1 person in my lane and it has been extremely difficult (not staying in their lane) or 5
other people with no problems.
When was the wall proposal put out for public comment? Who made this decision? What is the policy of public swim and lane rentals? Who writes them? Are lane contract negotiations open to the public?
The pool split will not decrease swimmer congestion. You will now have 5 people trying to share 25 meters. It will look like a fish hatchery. With 50 meters there is more space and distance between swimmers.
With the YMCA opening another short course pool. That will take some pressure off the Swim
Center. Maybe some of the swim teams will contract with them. Let us continue our unique experience of a 50 meter pool. Please – No Wall! Cynthia McBride, 522 Dell Place, 539-9896
