Greetings,
I am not a developer or an economist but I have an idea on how to ensure more affordable housing options in theCity.
The City could require that a developer must first build a well-built housing complex whether it be apartments, condos, 2 BR homes, etc. that would be considered affordable for at least 60% of the current population (or themedian income level based on the number of bedrooms) BEFORE they are permitted to build higher enddevelopments that only a fraction of the current population can afford.
This would ensure 1. more affordable housing options and 2. that developers are serious about being a part of thesolution. You can call it pay to play, if you want. Stipulations: There would be no easing of requirements, just asstringent inspections, and everything required for any other type of new building project in the City.
I’d love to hear your feedback including why this couldn’t work.
Thank you for your attention to this issue.
