DRB Appointments Commission Memorandum REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission FROM: Robin Crough, City Clerk SUBJECT: Appointment(s) to the Design Review Board (DRB) MEETING DATE: July 24, 2017 MEETING TYPE Action RECOMMENDED MOTION: I move to appoint up to two members to the Design Review Board to the following positions and terms: Three architect positions with terms ending June 30, 2019, and/or One architectural historian position with a term ending June 30, 2019. BACKGROUND: The Design Review Board (DRB) currently has four vacant positions: 1. Architect position, expiring June 30, 2019. 2. Architect position, expiring June 30, 2019. 3. Architect position, expiring June 30, 2019. 4. Architectural historian position, expiring June 30, 2019. The Design Review Board was created under Section 18.62 of the Bozeman Municipal Code. Members are appointed to staggered two-year terms. The Board is charged with the design review of certain plans and proposals and should be comprised of six professional and two non-professional members. Professional members should be degreed in their respective disciplines and/or otherwise licensed or certified by their respective professional authorities. They shall include four architects, one architectural historian, one landscape architect/designer, and two non-professional members. At least one of the professional members shall have a demonstrated expertise in urban design. The non-professional members shall have an interest in, or knowledge of, architecture, urban design, or historic preservation. No member shall serve as a member of the City Planning Board or the Zoning Commission concurrently. The Board is generally advisory to the City Planning Board, Board of Adjustment, and the City Commission, although it does make the final decisions on some minor applications. The board currently has four vacancies / expiring positions. The City Clerk’s Office has received two applications, with their relevant qualifications indicated below. 1., 2., & 3. I have a MA degree in history from Montana State, with additional graduate-level architectural training, and I meet all generally accepted qualifications to serve as an architectural historian, including 175 those established by the National Park Service. I've been a Bozeman resident since 1983, and have long had a strong professional and avocational interest in the city's historic and contemporary built environment. I am the former chair of the city's Historic Preservation Advisory Board, and have served as the architectural historian for the Design Review Board since 2009. I've been very pleased for the opportunity to serve the city in these ways, and I feel that the other DRB members and I have helped guide the city's rapid structural growth in a positive direction. I look forward to continuing to serve as a DRB member for a further two years. I have been a member of the Board for the last 2 years, and would like to continue to serve my community by helping to bring better quality design, planning, and development to 177 Bozeman. Being a trained and licensed Architect I see the effect of the built environment every day, and I am committed to helping the Bozeman community be the best it can be.
